Summer is the perfect time to take stock of your hunting gear, lay everything out, and give it a good inspection. The season is just around the corner and it’s important to make sure all of your gear is ready well ahead of time. Doing so now will save you time and headaches as the season approaches.  The last thing you want is to get out in the field and realize you don’t have what you need to take down your target. Here are a few key steps to take this summer to make sure your hunting gear is ready to go once the season rolls around.

HR unit

In a perfect world, your HR unit should currently be covered with dried blood and deer hair from last fall’s grip and grins. We hope so, anyway. If this is the case, you’ll want to take some time to wipe off the outside of the unit with a damp towel to remove all the grit and grime that’s been left from last season. A clean HR unit is a happy HR unit.

You should then go buy a can of dry compressed air and spray off your coil and fan. Make sure your HR unit is powered off when you do this. Lots of dust collects inside the HR unit over time, and this needs to be removed for maximum performance. Keeping the coil and fan clean can go a long way towards keeping your HR unit running at its optimum ozone output.

From here, you should run your unit through a simple system check. All you need to do is turn on the unit, toggle through all the modes, and then turn it off. Quick system checks like these are a great way to make sure everything is in working order before you take to your stand. Otherwise you could be stuck in the field without a properly working unit.

Batteries and charger

No matter where you are in your offseason, it’s always a good idea to cycle your Ozonics batteries every so often to keep them performing well when you need them down the road. Cycling your batteries is easy with these steps:

  • Start by charging the batteries all the way up.
  • Once your charger shows a green light indicating the battery is full, you can then put the battery into your HR unit.
  • Turn the HR unit on then toggle to Boost mode. Make sure to run your HR unit in a well-ventilated area on Boost mode until the unit shuts off. This will fully deplete the battery.
  • You should then charge the battery back to a 50% charge for extended periods of nonuse.
  • After your battery reaches a 50% charge, you should store it at room temperature in a dry location separate from your HR unit and charger.

Before you head out on your first hunt of the season, insert your battery into the charger and charge it to a full charge. Make sure your charger’s light switches from red to green as this will indicate the battery is now fully charged. You are now ready to take to your stand and focus on the hunt.

Mounting systems

During the offseason you’ll also want to put your mounting system through a thorough check. Make sure your EZ mount is tight on the bottom of your HR unit. You should also look over your EZ mount stud, knobs, and tree screw to make sure everything is in working order.

These are just a few of the steps you should take every offseason to ensure your gear remains in great condition and will serve you well once the seasons rolls around.
